2017 Fire Prevention Week

WHEREAS, Virginia is committed to reducing the devastating impact of fires by enhancing life safety education programs and performing critical fire prevention inspections; and

WHEREAS, Virginia fire departments responded to 28,343 home fires in 2016, resulting in 364 civilian injuries and 80 fatalities, according to the Virginia Fire Incident Reporting System (VFIRS); and

WHEREAS, one civilian was killed or injured by fire in Virginia every 20 hours in 2016; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s fire service members are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and

WHEREAS, today, homes burn hotter and more quickly, yielding a much smaller window of time for residents to exit safely; and

WHEREAS, residents may have as little as two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds; and

WHEREAS, a home fire escape plan is one of the fundamental elements of home fire safety, and can truly make the difference between life and death in a fire situation; and

WHEREAS, a home fire escape plan should include two exits from every room, a path to the outside from each exit, smoke alarms in all required locations and a meeting place outside where everyone in the home will meet upon exiting; and

WHEREAS, the 2017 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” effectively serves to educate the public about the importance of developing a home fire escape plan with all members of the household and practicing it twice a year; and

WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity for Virginians to educate themselves on the best practices necessary to prevent fires from spreading and to actively plan for escape routes if emergency strikes and to thank the brave men and woman who serve as firefighters;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 8-14, 2017, as FIRE PREVENTION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
