10/05/13 Boydton Plank Road Extrication

Posted on October 5, 2013

Shortly after 7 PM, two vehicles collided at the intersection of Boydton Plank Road and Sterling Road. An SUV with moderate damage ended up in the field beside the hotel, and the car involved was sent into the nearby guard rail. Damage from the impacts and the proximity to the guard rail prevented the driver from being removed from the left side door. The patient's condition made removal from the passenger side door undesirable. A "third door" was cut to facilitate the extrication. The driver was removed and transported to the hospital.

At the same time as this incident, Truck 4 responded with Companies 1 and 2 to a person stuck in a well, leaving Engine 4, Responder 4, and Medic 42 to the extrication incident that typically receives a two company assignment.

10/06/13 Satisfaction Lane Garage Fire

Posted on October 6, 2013

Shortly after 2 PM, a fully involved two-car garage was reported in Ford VFD's district. Tanker 4 responded and arrived shortly after Tanker 2 and Engine 2. Engine 4 established a draft site for the water shuttling operation. Tanker 1 joined Tankers 2 and 4 for water supply. Support 4 and Medic 42 responded for rehab and medical monitoring.
The structure and its contents were a complete loss due to the advanced stage of the fire prior to E911 notification. The residence nearby received minor damage due to the radiant heat. No injuries were reported and the incident remains under investigation.

10/20/13 Route 460 MVA

Posted on October 20, 2013

Shortly before 0500 hours on 10/20/13, a vehicle that was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Cox Road (Route 460) collided head-on with another vehicle. The incident was not reported as an entrapment and was dispatched as a normal vehicle incident with one engine company and one medic unit. A squad was dispatched along with a second medic unit shortly after the initial dispatch. Medic 42 was first on scene and reported that occupants of both vehicles were entrapped with severe damage to both vehicles. Engine 4 arrived and began working to extricate the driver of the car. Squad 2 arrived shortly thereafter and began extricating the driver of the SUV. Two medical helicopters were requested along with an additional engine company. The SUV presented a relatively difficult extrication due to the damage to the vehicle and the driver's position within the vehicle. One driver was transported to the hospital and succumbed to the injuries received. The other driver was flown to MCV for treatment.

Other units responding include Responder 4, Brush 1, Support 2, Utility 4, and Unit 100.
