09/01/12 I-85 Extrication

Posted on September 1, 2012

At around 4 PM on Saturday, 09/01/12, a box truck left the the roadway on southbound Interstate 85. The incident was observed by a Virginia State Trooper that was parked at the nearby turnaround. The accident was quickly reported by the trooper that the vehicle was in the trees and the occupant was entrapped. Company 4 was conducting a boot drive fund raiser at the time. Engine 4 was quickly  en route from the boot drive while Truck 4's 135 foot ladder had to be lowered to take down the American flag that was being flown.

Medic 42 arrived indicating that trees would need to be cut to gain access to the cab and that the dash board would likely need to be rolled. Engine 4 arrived, indicated that the truck was stabilized and subsequently began cutting the needed trees from the vehicle. Shortly after Truck 4's arrival, the two crews were able to remove the driver's side door and  extricate the driver who was subsequently transported to Southside Regional Medical Center with NLT injuries.

The contents of the truck posed little hazard at the scene, except for responders that were hungry from a day of fund raising (the box truck was full of baked goods… om nom nom nom!).

A Busy Weekend

Posted on September 16, 2012

The weekend of September 15th brought a variety of activities to Company 4. In addition to conducting a Firefighter I recruit school both days, normal business went on as usual.

-A train versus car MVA

-A dumpster fire (a welcome back run for Firefighter Kolb)

-A stolen vehicle fire (dash cam and helmet cam pics included)

-Several calls of "smoke in the area"

-A brush fire (well, sort of a brush fire)

-Alarm activations

-Cardiac arrest and other EMS runs

All while completing the recruit school modules, driver training, pre-planning of SVTC, and orientation for the new folks.

2012 Haunted Forest

Posted on September 17, 2012

As Promised…

In 2011 the annual Namozine Haunted Forest was not held due to several factors. To the dismay of our neighbors that have made it a tradition, the forest was canceled with the intention of making it bigger and better.

The 2012 Haunted Forest is going to happen. This year, for the first time ever, it will be held at the Virginia Motorsports Park. VMP has generously joined the effort and has offered their facility among other things. New this year will obviously be an all new haunted experience, but also:

  • -nearly limitless parking
  • -more activities before and after the forest (if you make it trough the forest, that is)
  • -advance sales for tickets
  • -more nights of fun and fright,
  • -and more
